Walter Brisk's Farewell Concert - "Thank You for the Music"
Walter Brisk has been our Musical Director since the United Christian Singers was formed in 1988.
It all began when Christian Music Ministries founder, Roger Jones, a writer of contemporary Christian Musicals, asked Walter if it would be possible to form a choir of upwards of 100 singers, to join his touring group of musicians, to perform his new musical, Mary Magdalene, and to stage it in the Free Trade Hall in Manchester. Walter got the support of Bamford Chapel, circulated all the church denominations he could find, and one Monday evening early in 1988, a 180 strong choir performed to a full house and it was well received.
At our debriefing meeting a few days later, there was immense pleasure in what had been done, and a unanimous proposal that, with our own home-grown soloists, instead of Roger’s touring team, we should repeat the musical at several venues in the area. The United Christian Singers was born!
The membership of this choir, around 80 at this time, covers every denomination from Roman Catholic to Evangelical fellowships, and an area from Ramsbottom to the north, Altherton to the West and Alderley Edge to the south.
Since our formation, we have performed 28 different works in 88 different locations in the environs on Greater Manchester and as far afield as Christchurch in the centre of Southport and some more unusual than others, having twice been into HM prisons to perform in front of captive audiences!
Walter in all the years he has been our Musical Director has never had to miss a rehearsal or performance due to illness. However, now at the age of 88 he feels it is time to 'hang up his baton' and hand over to someone else to build on the strong foundations and fellowship enjoyed by the choir in telling the Gospel in words and song.
These two concerts are the choir's way of saying "Thank you for the Music" that Walter has directed over the past 28 years.
The programme is a selection of some of Walter's favourite pieces, using many of the soloists who have performed for us during this time.
Through these songs, we hope you will hear of our journey with Walter and see and hear the joy we have experienced in singing the Gospel and moved many people who came along to listen.
